1. Introduction

Describely AI ("the App") is a Shopify application that helps merchants generate optimized product content using artificial intelligence. This Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, how we protect it, and your rights regarding that data.

By installing and using the App, you agree to the terms of this Privacy Policy.

2. Data We Collect

When you install and use the App, we collect the following data:

Store Information

  • Your Shopify store domain (e.g., your-store.myshopify.com)
  • Shopify access tokens required to read and update your products on your behalf

Product Data

  • Product titles, descriptions, and features that you choose to send for AI content generation
  • Product IDs used to sync generated content back to your Shopify store

Generation History

  • Records of AI-generated content, including prompts, inputs (product title, features, target audience, tone, language), and outputs (descriptions, SEO titles, meta descriptions, FAQs, bullet points, benefits)
  • Timestamps of when content was generated
  • Whether content was applied to a Shopify product

Subscription Information

  • Your current billing plan within the App (Free or Pro)
  • Monthly generation usage counts

What We Do NOT Collect

  • Customer personal data: The App operates at the store level and does not access, process, or store any of your customers' personally identifiable information (PII), including names, emails, addresses, or payment details.
  • Payment information: All billing is handled securely through Shopify's Billing API. We never see or store your credit card or payment details.
  • Analytics or tracking data: We do not use cookies, tracking pixels, or third-party analytics within the App.

3. How We Use Your Data

We use the data we collect for the following purposes:

  • Content generation: To generate AI-powered product descriptions, SEO metadata, FAQs, bullet points, and benefits based on the product data you provide.
  • Generation history: To maintain a history of generated content so you can review, compare, undo, and re-apply past content.
  • Subscription management: To manage your billing plan and enforce usage limits based on your subscription tier.
  • Product sync: To read your Shopify products and write AI-generated content back to your store when you choose to apply it.
  • Service improvement: To improve the quality, reliability, and performance of the App.

We do not use your data for advertising, marketing to your customers, or any purpose unrelated to the functionality of the App.

4. How Artificial Intelligence Is Used

When you request content generation, the following product data is sent to our AI provider (Anthropic/Claude):

  • Product title
  • Product features
  • Target audience
  • Tone of voice
  • Language preference

This data is used solely for the purpose of generating your requested content. Important details about our AI usage:

  • Your product data is not used to train AI models.
  • AI-generated content is returned to the App and stored in our database for your access.
  • The AI provider processes your data in accordance with their own privacy policy and data processing agreements.
  • Auto-generated content (triggered by product creation webhooks for Pro plan users) uses the same AI pipeline with default parameters.

5. Data Storage and Security

Where Your Data Is Stored

  • Application hosting: The App is hosted on Vercel, a cloud platform with global edge infrastructure.
  • Database: Your store data and generation history are stored in a PostgreSQL database hosted by Supabase with encryption at rest and in transit.

Security Measures

  • All data transmitted between your browser, our servers, and third-party services is encrypted using TLS/SSL.
  • Shopify access tokens are stored securely and are never exposed to the client side.
  • All incoming Shopify webhook requests are verified using HMAC signature validation to prevent unauthorized access.
  • API routes are protected by session authentication to ensure only authorized store owners can access their data.
  • Database access is restricted to the application layer with role-based permissions.

6. Data Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or trade your data. We share data only with the following third-party service providers as necessary to operate the App:

7. Data Retention and Deletion

While the App Is Installed

We retain your data for as long as the App is installed on your Shopify store. This includes your store information, generation history, and subscription data.

When You Uninstall the App

When you uninstall the App, your session data and access tokens are deleted immediately via the app/uninstalled webhook.

Shopify Mandatory Compliance Webhooks

We comply with all Shopify mandatory GDPR/privacy webhooks:

  • Customer data request (customers/data_request): Since we do not collect customer PII, we acknowledge the request and confirm no customer data is held.
  • Customer data erasure (customers/redact): Since we do not store customer PII, we acknowledge the request and confirm no customer data requires deletion.
  • Shop data erasure (shop/redact): Upon receiving this request, all data associated with your store is permanently deleted, including generation history, templates, store records, and any related data.

Manual Data Deletion

You may request deletion of all your data at any time by contacting us at the email address provided below. We will process your request within 30 days.

8. Your Rights

As a merchant using the App, you have the right to:

  • Access: Request a copy of all data we hold about your store.
  • Correction: Request correction of any inaccurate data.
  • Deletion: Request permanent deletion of all your data at any time.
  • Portability: Export your generation history in JSON or CSV format directly from the App.
  • Withdraw consent: Uninstall the App at any time, which will trigger data cleanup as described above.

For EU/EEA Merchants (GDPR)

If you are located in the European Union or European Economic Area, you have additional rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), including the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

For California Merchants (CCPA)

If you are a California resident, you have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), including the right to know what personal information is collected, the right to delete, and the right to opt out of the sale of personal information. We do not sell personal information.

9. Children's Privacy

The App is designed for use by Shopify merchants and is not intended for use by individuals under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

10. International Data Transfers

Your data may be processed and stored in locations outside your country of residence, including the United States, where our hosting and AI providers operate. By using the App, you consent to the transfer of your data to these locations. We ensure that appropriate safeguards are in place to protect your data in accordance with applicable data protection laws.

11. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, legal requirements, or other factors. When we make significant changes:

  • We will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
  • We will notify merchants of material changes through the App or via email.

We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically to stay informed about how we protect your data.
